PARKERSBURG – After a four-year hiatus, the Parkersburg Art Center will host its biennial juried exhibition “River” starting on Sunday.

The exhibition for professional and semi-professional artists from West Virginia and Ohio begins with an opening and awards ceremony from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday at the Main Gallery at 725 Market St.

“Even after the break, we received a record number of entries (211) from artists from both states,” said Abby Hayhurst, artistic director of the center. “Thank you to our jurors, Alison Helm of West Virginia University and Ardine Nelson of Ohio State University, for selecting the 112-piece exhibit and for choosing the winners…a herculean task!”

The River exhibit is made up of works by 70 painters, sculptors, photographers, and more… even textiles and quilling. There’s definitely something for everyone to enjoy about this big, lush show, she said.

Cash prizes will be awarded to artists in various categories, but visitors can participate in one of the most sought-after prizes, the Peoples’ Choice Award.

Everyone who attends the opening reception will receive one ballot, but can get more at the reception for $1 each. Voting will continue throughout this exhibition, which will remain on display until September 17.

The river would not be possible without the sponsorship of WVU Medicine/Camden Clark Medical Center and United Bank, Hayhurst said.

“Many of the works in the exhibition are for sale, so if there is something you like, you can make a purchase and take it home when the exhibition ends in September,” she says.

The PAC 713 market will also be open on Sunday from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. This is the Art Center’s new and improved gift shop which currently features the work of over 70 regional artists and artisans in addition to small Art Center loot and craft kits for children . .

Admission to the Sunday Opening Reception will be $10 and free for Art Center members and children 12 and under. During regular hours, Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., the gallery is open to all and donations are welcome. The Parkersburg Art Center is located at 725 Market Street in downtown Parkersburg, at the corner of Market and Eighth streets.
