One in seven people struggle with food insecurity, and that’s why the Gallatin Valley Food Bank is giving away free Thanksgiving meals to help people who need a little extra help this holiday season.
“Thanksgiving is a great time of year, isn’t it?” And so for a lot of people, it’s very difficult to afford that meal,” says Jill Holder, director of food nutrition at HRDC. “And so we are able to provide a full holiday meal, like all Thanksgiving shopping.
HRDC’s Gallatin Valley Food Bank plans to distribute 1,000 Thanksgiving dinners. They had a distribution in Belgrade and Bozeman on Sunday, but they still plan to distribute hundreds more until Thanksgiving.
“Six hundred is the number we’ve handed out and I’ll probably be handing out more in the next few days here,” Holder says.
The food bank isn’t the only place offering a free Thanksgiving meal. Bozeman Real Estate Group is hosting a Thanksgiving dinner in Bourbon.
“It’s become my favorite Thanksgiving tradition and the best part of Thanksgiving is having the opportunity to get out and meet a huge segment of the community,” says Andrew Hurlburt, owner of the Bozeman Real Estate group.
Hurlburt says the company has been serving Thanksgiving dinner since the company was founded five years ago.
“We usually have between 20 and 25 Bozeman Real Estate Group members who will come in to help serve, clean and cook,” says Hurlburt.
He says that since the Fork and Spoon are not having a dinner party this year, he expects a bigger turnout.
“We plan to accommodate 350 to 400+ people,” says Hurlburt.
If you’re planning on heading to Bourbon for the Bozeman Real Estate Group Thanksgiving, you can keep an eye out for Hurlburt in his turkey hat.
“I cook, I’ll be there early and I’ll cook like crazy and I’ll be the guy in the turkey hat, running around and bringing loads of food to everyone,” says Hurlburt.
You can also join Taco Montes on Thanksgiving for their 7th annual free lunch from noon until they run out.
