Le Meridien workers vote to become Teamsters Local 856

Front desk staff at Le Méridien, a Marriot property, vote to join Teamsters Local 856

On Thursday, June 2, front desk staff at the famed upscale Le Méridien hotel in San Francisco voted overwhelmingly to join Teamsters Local 856, joining a growing movement of unionized hotels in the area. of the bay.

“We are proud of the front desk staff at Le Méridien who have raised their voices with a resounding yes to becoming Teamsters,” said Peter Finn, Secretary-Treasurer of Teamsters Local 856. Bay Area employees and Le Méridien front desk staff are now included. We look forward to getting to the bargaining table and securing a strong collective agreement for these members.

Workers faced a blatant anti-union campaign, with the company hiring a notoriously anti-union law firm. Captive audience meetings and daily one-on-one meetings were held by management to dissuade people from joining the union, the workers reported.

“I am so happy that my colleagues and I can see our hard work pay off,” said Kelly McKee, a receptionist at Le Méridien. “We have organized our union and it is great to see that the reception staff at Le Méridien will enjoy the respect and fair treatment that we have always deserved.”

The 23-member unit consists of front desk attendants, night listeners, bellboys, and PBX operators.

“It’s a wonderful feeling to know that the team I work with and I will be treated with dignity and respect,” said Alfonso Cano, a front desk employee at Le Méridien. “We will sleep better knowing that as union members we can count on greater job security. We look forward to justice, equality, better working conditions and benefits. Some of my co-workers have never been unionized before and I’m thrilled they’re experiencing being a member of Teamsters 856.”

Le Méridien Hotel is a Marriot International property.

Teamsters Local 856 represents workers at more than 50 Bay Area hotels, including Hyatt, Hilton and many boutique hotels.

Founded in 1949, Teamsters Local 856 represents more than 17,000 working members in the San Francisco Bay Area, North Bay, Sacramento and Central Valley communities.
