NEW YORK (AP) – Oprah Winfrey’s book club’s new pick is Richard Powers’ “Bewilderment”, her first Pulitzer Prize-winning novel “The Overstory” and already on the fictional list for the National Book Awards.
“My next pick is from one of our nation’s greatest living writers, Richard Powers, who writes some of the finest quotes I’ve ever read,” Winfrey said in a statement Tuesday.
Powers, 64, whose other books include “Orfeo” and “The Echo Maker”, winner of the National Book Award in 2006, said in a statement he was “honored and moved to be named” Oprah Book Club ‘ selection.
“‘Baffled’ does not begin to describe it,” he added. “This is one of the most rewarding awards I have received in my 40-year career.
Winfrey’s interview with Powers airs October 22 on Apple TV Plus. Powers is known for his complex narratives that often focus on science, technology, and the environment. “Perplexity,” published last week, talks about a widowed astrobiologist and his struggles raising his 9-year-old son.
Tuesday’s announcement comes just over a month since Winfrey’s previous book club choice: Honorée Fanonne Jeffers’ debut novel “WEB Du Bois’s Love Songs”.
